Ward, who joined Posh as replacement for Andy Dibble at the end of October, withdrew from the teams training camp in Tenerife at the last minute on Saturday citing illness.
However, he arrived at London Road on Monday and handed in his resignation.
It is presumed that Ward will now take up a similar position at Preston North End who appointed former Posh manager Darren Ferguson as their new boss last week.
