A howling gale and Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper John Achterberg made it a frustrating afternoon.
Peterborough just couldn't turn their second half bombardment into goals and had to be content with a point.
Experienced Dutchman Achterberg, one of the stars of the Merseysider's FA Cup run that ended with quarter final replay defeat by Millwall in midweek, was again outstanding with a performance that even drew praise from Posh manager Barry Fry.
"Tranmere must have thought it was their birthday to go home with a point although the goalkeeper did very well and the weather was a big factor and made it difficult for both sides.
"But I am bitterly disappointed not to have won after we totally dominated the second half," said Fry.
Rovers boss Brian Little hardly disagreed, commenting: "It's probably the worst game I have ever seen - but could turn out to be one of the best points we have gained. We have been playing well lately and losing but this time we were absolutely useless and still got a point." Achterberg's defiance started when he pushed Calum Willock's first half effort against a post and after the break he denied the Posh striker again, turning a close range header from Andy Legg's long throw over the bar. And when Achterberg was beaten by Curtis Woodhouse, the woodwork came to the rescue with the Posh skipper's 25 yard shot curling against the inside of an upright.
Tranmere had more of the possession with the first half gale at their backs yet failed to create a single worthwhile opening. With Posh pressing for most of the second period David Farrell, Clive Platt and Woodhouse all failed to get in a shot when the wind stopped one Achterberg goal kick before it was barely out of the penalty area.
Willock did bundle the ball into the net in the dying minutes but the effort was disallowed by referee Mark Clattenburg for a foul on Achterberg.
